The Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências (FC.ID) is a Non-Profit Private Association endowed with legal personality. It was created in 2017 as a common initiative of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (Ciências) – a Higher Education institution accredited to grant doctoral (PhD) degrees – and 6 private companies, to support, potentiate and develop Research and Development and Innovation activities of its 7 associates, while simultaneously enhancing Ciências strategic partnerships with market and service companies, thus creating a more challenging environment for research and innovation. FC.ID is the legal representative of 19 National Science and Technology System R&I Centres from different scientific fields.
The FC.ID team involved in NanoBioMitig Project is in BioISI-Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (www.BioISI.pt) – a multidisciplinary research centre based at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. BioISI´s goal is to understand and address biological questions using integrative -Systems- approaches at the vanguard of life sciences research in the areas of Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, and Biological Chemistry. By gathering scientists from bio-, physics, and computational sciences, BioISI benefits from a unique multidisciplinary environment to foster the creative thinking of researchers and advanced students to solve problems through integrative approaches.

BMML – Bioactive and Multifunctional Materials Laboratory
Research and development of new functional materials and innovative technologies at the forefront of research is the main goal of the Bioactive and Multifunctional Materials Laboratory (BMML) as part of the Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI). It aims to apply, exchange, and transfer its knowledge under collaborative work with research entities, universities, and the industry, to achieve potential sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions capable of promoting a healthy coexistence of mankind’s needs and activities with nature….
Atomic Force Microscopy and Related Techniques Lab
The Atomic Force Microscopy and Related Techniques (AFMaRT) Lab is a research laboratory dedicated to the exploration of the Nanoworld. Our main area of research is condensed matter physics, including soft matter, molecular biology, fluidics, magnetism, tribology, and several other domains, at the nanoscale. We are part of Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI), Group Bio-PhysNano, allowing us to be involved in several investigations coupling different areas of research, where interdisciplinarity is a keyword. Here, the potential of the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) for probing all sorts of interactions plays a central role.
BIOTOX – Biomonitoring and Ecotoxicology laboratory
MARE is a centre for scientific research, technological development and innovation, geared towards the problems and challenges of society.
With technical and scientific competences to address all aquatic ecosystems, including river basins and adjacent areas, estuaries, coastal and oceanic marine ecosystems, MARE adopts an integrative and holistic approach, in close partnership with national and international institutions. MARE’s main objectives are to contribute to knowledge about the functioning of marine ecosystems and the estuarine and freshwater environments that are interrelated with them; to develop scientific and technological tools for the sustainable use of freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems, in accordance with priorities at regional, national and international level; develop scientific knowledge and technology to support the provision of food and other biotic and abiotic resources for society; promote the good ecological status and health of oceans and seas, estuaries and river basins; direct international co-operation for advanced training, contributing to a new generation of scientists and professionals prepared for the Blue Economy; promote ocean literacy and contribute to a participatory Blue Society.
The Biomonitoring and Ecotoxicology Laboratory (BIOTOX) is based on a research group and a service infrastructure at FCUL. As a research group, it aims to develop answers to the challenges in the field of ecotoxicology of emerging and classic contaminants by developing new ecotoxicological monitoring and testing methodologies and new biomarkers, promoting food safety and traceability by promoting informed consumption, developing new biotechnological solutions to societal challenges and developing environmental restoration methodologies. As a service-providing infrastructure, the Biomonitoring and Ecotoxicology Laboratory provides analytical and advisory services in the environmental field to various players in society, including academia and the business community.

Association of Instituto Superior Técnico for Research and Development (IST-ID)
The Association of Instituto Superior Técnico for Research and Development (IST-ID) is a private not-for-profit institution, which primarily aims at carrying out Science and Technology activities, fostering knowledge transfer, and promoting the involvement of national and foreign researchers in RD&I projects in their areas of expertise. The IST-ID carries out RD&I activities in two major areas, which are associated with challenges with a strong impact on society. These are strongly interdisciplinary areas in different fields of engineering, science and technology, and architecture. The RD&I activities comprise not only fundamental aspects but also projects with a strong applied component: Basic Sciences, Information and Communication Technologies, Energy, Environment and Mobility, Applied Life Sciences, Materials, Nanotechnologies and Nanosciences, Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, Manufacturing Technologies Engineering, Nuclear Reactors and Accelerators, Nuclear Safety, and Radiological Protection.
The Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) is a research unit at IST that explores innovative approaches in Biosciences and Bioengineering and transforms scientific knowledge into innovation. The iBB research group, Biospectroscopy, and Interfaces Research Group focuses on Molecular and Cellular Biophysics, Fluorescence and Surface Spectroscopies, and the Synthesis of Molecules, Polymers, and Nanoparticles, having in view both fundamental and applied science.

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), is a leading institution of international reputation in research and teaching, occupying the 1st position in Portugal in Chemical Engineering (NTU 2020). FEUP is the host institution of 8 R&D units which promote the development of innovative technological solutions, being LEPABE (Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environmental, Biotechnology and Energy) one of these.
Consistently evaluated as “Excellent” by international panels appointed by FCT, LEPABE accounts for 82 doctorate researchers from a total of 213. Its mission is to develop innovative processes and products to respond effectively to societal challenges, using the basis of chemical and biological engineering to improve the quality of life in a sustainable and safe way. The strategic goals are in line with the Horizon Europe priorities, focusing on research excellence, industrial competitiveness, and societal challenges, as well as those of the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The organization in research groups and laboratory conditions are available at www.lepabe.fe.up.pt. The participation in this project lead by FCiências.ID (BioISI) will be developed within the Biotechnology group. This group comprises 51 researchers focused on topics related to biofilm development and control with practical applications in industry and health sectors, as well as marine microorganism-based engineering for the energy, pharmaceuticals, and food sectors.
